We have met with marked success upon the barred rivers emptying into the Lakes and upon plans devised as early as 1826. Such increased depths of entrance have been obtained to the harbors within the entrances, that the cost of transportation of grains has been reduced from, say Milwaukee to Buffalo, from 25 cents per bushel, the earliest cost to 1 3/4 cents, the more recent. Indeed, the saving in the cost of Lake transportation through the action of the works would pay for their cost over and over again many times.
