My dear Father.
I have just this moment received a letter from Gen. [??]; (one of the kindest and [crossed out] most [crossed out] pleasantest letters I have ever received, from any of my chiefs.) telling me, that Kurtz objects to giving up the 3d [??], that of Fortifications, and, that if I will be willing to accept the 2d [??], he will be glad to see me.
