Portland Me. March 4 1867
My dear Father
We received a telegram (Sunday) requiring our presence in New York City by 2 [??] [??] if possible. Emma's father has been a very ill man for some three months with [??] in the bladder. A little over two weeks ago he was brought to New York on a litter. And now I presume the operation is to take place which the doctors after several consultations have determined must be by cutting. Mr. [??] is too far gone to stand the [enabling??] operation. It will be an exceedingly hazardous operation at all accounts
