My dear Father.

I have at last made up my mind not to leave at the service. It is four months now that I have been at the Port'd Co. and in that time I have become pretty well convinced that I could never lead a happy life in a business the very existence of which from day to day, or from month to month, is dependent on so many contingencies. A spark of fire, dropping in the roof of one its buildings might in half an hour sweep the Rockland Co. from the face of the earth. in which case I if I had resigned my commission would be without employment went and compelled to wander about soliciting
