the death of Bessie's little son Silas. Scott was probably away on his trip to [?] and the dear girl must indeed have been lonely and heart broken. I wrote her as soon as I heard of her loss and only regret it was not in my power or in that of any of us to have been near her to comfort and assist her. I think they had better come in from that coast where they can be nearer their friends.
Silas has been made a Lieut Commander and as his pay now is some $3100 a year he will be able to live very comfortably.
