Now I have promised to give the Directors of the Portland Company a definite answer, as to whether I will take the place or not by the middle of April. and in case Mr Fessenden should fail to get my leave or Mr. Stanton refuse to let me have one. What would you do if you were in my place? Would you resign or would you stick to the army?

I do wish my dear father you would think the matter over for me and let me know your candid opinion. I believe I have the ability to get a living out of the [?] but it may be I shall have to perform duties not quite as agreeable to my feelings and pride as if I was in the service.
