My dear Father,
The Portland Company are again at me wishing me to resign and take charge of their establishment and they now offer me $5000 a year and will guarantee me in this position and salary for five years. In addition they stipulate that offer being there a year if I find I can obtain a higher salary, they will not consider me bound to them for a longer period than the year.
Now if the present Army bills pass Congress and they should fill all the vacancies created with officers that are above me I should be the 9th major and should in all probability be promoted to a
