My dear Father

I received your last letter a few days since. I have been intending to write you for some time back but as I heard you are at Staten Island and indeed absent from Washington on leave I thought it best to wait until your return to the city.

Col. Thorn arrived here about the middle of July and I turned over to him the charge of Fort Gorges in this harbor. He has an office just next to me and seems to be a very pleasant man.
