and got a stateroom on the second boat. It was an inside room and next to the [smokestack?] on part of the partition at the foot of the bunk being so hot I couldn't put my foot against it. You can imagine the room was like the infernal regions but I managed to sleep a little with the door open.

On going to the office Tuesday morning I found a letter from Mr Andrews one of the police commissioners asking me to make designs in a limited competition between four or five architects for a new police station. I worked on it a day or two before going to Washington and am in hopes I will get a job which if I do may lead to others of the same kind.
