March 3, 1883

My dear General,

Yours of March 1st and inclosures were received yesterday and I am glad the professional duty they are to require of us has been limited to the determinations of the strength of the Bridge because the other questions could only have been answered unsatisfactorily. This question can be be determined more clearly and our report upon it will either give the public confidence in the Bridge and induce them to use it or the [strikethrough] strength [strikethrough] structure will be held under a cloud and the timid and careful will exaggerate its defects. Under these circumstances a thorough investigation of the strength of the Work in all its parts will make a valuable [?] for the Bridge Company and I think they should pay us five thousand dollars each for our work and opinions upon it. If you think this too much cut it down to proper terms.

I am getting better and beginning to feel more like myself again.

Very truly Yours

Thos Lincoln Casey
